The Towering Inferno
Tom Weiskopf was known as the "Towering Inferno" due to his intensity and anger management on the course. His career is a highlight reel, both as a player and golf course architect, but I want to focus on his record in the Masters. He played in this major championship a total of 15 times. The first was in 1968 when he finished T16 earning a trip back to Augusta for the 1969 tournament where he finished T2.
He finished T2 another three times in 1972, 1974 and in one of the most exciting Masters, 1975 when he battled Johnny Miller and Jack Nicklaus for the green jacket. He finished in the top 10 a total of seven times. The last time he placed in the top 10 was in 1982.
His Masters record has to be one of the most impressive for a player who never won the green jacket. Can you think of a better record from a non-winner?
Weiskopf is on my mind because of his announcement this week that he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and has begun chemotherapy treatment. Our thoughts go out to Tom and his family as they battle this insidious illness.
This week's vintage ad features Weiskopf, along with Julius Boros, in an ad for Champion Spark Plugs.
