Were You a Caddie? Tell Us Your Story⛳
Caddie Tales
Most of us, of a certain age, were introduced to the game of golf by caddying as a kid. If your dad played, he brought you along to pull the cart on his weekend round. Or, a friend turned you onto this wonderful way to earn a bit of cash as a kid.
You would sit in the "caddie yard" (our club had benches outside the temporary clubhouse) and a member would select you to loop for him. If you did a good job, you would become a regular on that member's bag. You could earn twice as much if you carried both his and his wife's bag for a Sunday round.
Not only was it a great way to earn some money, but the life lessons and stories you absorbed on the course would last you the rest of your life. I was selected from the bench by the local veterinarian and became his regular. He had a large red and white staff bag that was almost as big as me. His wife had a burnt golden staff bag and I would lug both around the course on Sundays to earn a double rate. They both smoked pipes.
The doctor was a bit forgetful and it became routine for him to realize that he left his pipe somewhere back on the holes that were played. He would take the big bag and sent me back to look for the forgotten pipe. Having no idea which hole he forgot it on, I would backtrack the holes until I found it. So I would caddie for about 13 or 14 holes which was great.
When our family got a new puppy we took it to get his first checkup from the doctor. On the way home we heard soft whining from the backseat. Turns out the doctor forgot to remove the thermometer from our puppy's rear.
Reader Martin C. (a member of the Facebook group The Society of Golf Historians, a group I highly recommend) emailed with his caddie story recently. He looped at Winged Foot for a famous business agent to many sports stars who was playing a match with a well known attorney from New York. Both had houses on the golf course - one on the front nine of the west course and one on the back nine.
The pair stopped their game at the first house, had drinks and then continued on to the turn where they had more drinks. They stopped once more at the house on the back nine and while Martin whiled away the time putting on the green located near the house, the two men drank some more. As could be expected the round ended there.
