The Pro That Recorded the Album "Augusta" With Willie Nelson⛳
Mr. Clean Contends in the 1960 U.S. Open
In 1995, country music star Willie Nelson recorded an album with his close friend Don Cherry, a big band singer known for his hit "Band of Gold" from 1955. The album was "Augusta" and featured the iconic theme music from the Masters with added vocals. You can listen to the album on Spotify or other music streaming platforms.
Cherry was a very accomplished amateur golfer and played on three Walker Cup teams and played in nine Masters tournaments making the cut seven times with a best finish of T-25 in 1959. He also contended in the 1960 U.S. Open at Cherry Hills before finishing in 9th place, tied with Ben Hogan, four strokes behind the champion, Arnold Palmer.
He turned pro in 1962 and his sweetly smooth singing voice contrasted with his volatile temper out on the golf course. He spent his time on tour competing against the top pros during the day and performing in a local nightclub at night. He was also the voice of Mr. Clean commercials of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
