Bay Area Manufacturer Hits Jackpot With Player Endorsements
In 1962 Tony Lema and Ken Venturi signed endorsement contracts with the Fernquist and Johnson company. Venturi would design the irons that both he and Lema would play on tour. He designed a traditional rounded toe model for himself and a squared off high toe model for Lema.
By the end of the 1964 season the small bay area company had the reigning U.S. Open champion, Open Championship winner and the World Series of Golf winner in their stable. Venturi's incredible win at Congressional, Lema's breakthrough major at St. Andrews and Lema coming out on top at Firestone in the World Series of Golf with its $50,000 payday.
