Johnny Miller Plays In U.S. Open During Summer Vacation From High School
The U.S. Open was coming to Johnny Miller's home course, Olympic Club in the summer of 1966. The club had extended a membership it's Junior Golf Section to Miller in 1963 and he was excited that the national championship was to be played on the course he knew so well.
Miller signed up to be a caddie in the Open, but he also entered to qualify and then played well enough to earn his way into the tournament. He played a couple of practice rounds with Jack Nicklaus and, once he made the cut, he played the third round with Nicklaus.
Miller eventually tied for 8th winning low amateur by three strokes. The finish earned him an entry into the 1967 Masters where he finished tied for 53rd and a return trip to the 1967 U.S. Open at Baltusral where he missed the cut.
